My practice explores time, presence, love and loss, connection, and trust through textiles, installation, performance, moving image, and sound. In recent years, my practice has centred on natural dyeing on silk. Working with natural dyes that I make from plants, minerals, and everyday organic materials has taught me a different way of being in the world, allowing time, water, light, and natural pigments to shape the work according to their own rhythms.
Drawing on Buddhist philosophy, Zen, and the contemplative discipline of tea ceremony, my practice is informed by an understanding of impermanence, emptiness, and interdependence. These ideas encourage me to embrace uncertainty and learn to trust through the process of making.
Growing up among the mountains and rivers of Yunnan shaped my sensitivity to water, materials, and seasonal change. These early experiences continue to inform my relationship with the natural world and my understanding of making as a process of coexistence. Sustainability is also an important part of my practice.
I am fascinated by the glow of translucency, the traces of time, fragments of thought, unspoken words, and the quiet power of empty space. I hope colour can speak where words fall away, opening a space for intuition and the subconscious. As the work unfolds, the ego gradually recedes, allowing a conversation between material, time, and the natural world to emerge as a form of spiritual connection.
